The inspiration for this pattern came while I was trying to design a peacock-themed baby blanket for my niece. During the trial and error for that design, I thought the double crochet scallops with picots would be beautiful as a lace ribbon-y motif. And once I get a whiff of lace-related inspiration, try and stop me. I dare you.
I had a difficult time deciding what color to use for the blanket, so as I constantly do, I turned to one of my best friends for advice. She recommended emerald, the May birthstone, and that set off a series of events that led to me making a sampler in every birthstone color. The pattern includes supply lists that can help you make a blanket in the sweet baby girl in your life’s birthstone hue.
While I had originally envisioned this as a baby blanket, I loved the result so much, I had to adapt it for larger sizes. The pattern also includes instructions to make a small throw and a large throw/bed size. I can’t wait to make a throw for myself and watch all my favorite period dramas. I named this pattern “The Donwell” because one of my highlights of 2020 was the new Emma film. The movie brings me so much joy – the whimsy, the costumes, the connection I feel to my younger self while watching it. And I think this blanket would fit right into its aesthetic.
The pattern is suitable for confident beginners and up. The stitches used are chain stitch, half double crochet, single crochet, and picot double crochet. It also uses basic stitching with Pearl Cotton No. 5 embroidery thread to tack down the scallops. The pattern contains step-by-step photo tutorials for the less common stitches and techniques.
